Practical GeoAI Ethics

Please register on Eventbrite here. We are hosting a hybrid one-day workshop to discuss how ethical principles may be put into practice within organisations that work at the intersection of geospatial data and AI/automated decision-making (GeoAI).The ContextMany geospatial organisations are beginning to commit to the trustworthy use of location data and ethical principles, such as the Locus Charter. It is now therefore imperative that we implement practices that will assure our adherence to these principles. Whilst some organisations are beginning to identify and implement ethical practice, many of us are unsure of what next steps we should take. This workshop is our opportunity to share and bring together experiences and ideas. The discussion will consider what organisational structures, processes, and tools need to be in place to ensure that organisations can meet these principles. We will be considering practises that focus purely on geospatial data as well as those that address AI and automated decision-making.   Workshop GoalsOur goals for this event are for participants to: share knowledge about existing practices that support the identification, limitation and mitigation of ethical harms when using GeoAI and to support each other to identify the tools and methods that could be used in our own organisations to promote ethical practice in GeoAI work.  Participants willGain a clear understanding of the Locus Charter, contribute to a shared picture of existing practices of the ethical use of GeoAI,collaboratively identify practical tools/methods for aligning their work with ethical principles, receive a summary of the workshop after the event.  The EventThe day will consist of short talks, individual and group activities, and discussions of case studies to draw out different ideas and practical approaches: Proposed agenda:10:30     Workshop Introduction 10:45     Talk: Ethical Principles 11:00     Activity: Engaging with the Principles (with refreshments)  11:45   Talk: Moving from Principles to Practice 12:00   Lunch (with activity) 13:00   Talks: Practical examples enacted in organisations 14:00   Discussion: Case-study brainstorming (with refreshments) 15:30   Reflection: Discussion with all participants 16:00   Close You will come away with a clear appreciation of ethical principles (in particular the Locus Charter) and new ideas about ethical practice in the field of GeoAI. A report, summarising the workshop, will be produced after the event, describing the discussions, conclusions and identifying opportunities for future collaboration. We also hope that you will take away a personal set of next steps for implementing ethical practice in your own organisation. The workshop will take place as a hybrid event at Ordnance Survey Explorer House in Southampton on Thursday 16th June 2022. There will be plenty of breaks throughout the day to collect your thoughts and take a breather. We'd love to see you there so if you're interested, please register. If you can’t attend but still think the event sounds useful, you can register your interest, and we’ll be sure to keep you in the loop.We also have some short talking slots available, so if you are interested in sharing any ethical practices that you have implemented, please contact mel.marochov@os.uk.
